FOUR WORDS FROM CLARRIE: THE STAMP, THE ROUTE, AND THE LETTER THAT NOW CONNECTS EVERYTHING

There are three things sitting on the table at once, and the town is doing its best to pretend they are separate.

On Wednesday morning, Clarrie Burton bought a single stamp at Lorraine's store. First purchase of the kind in years, Lorraine noted, with the precision of a woman who tracks this sort of inventory personally. He was at the bench at seven-forty and gone by eight-oh-two. Twenty-two minutes. Whatever he bought the stamp for, it was already written.

On Friday before noon, Ray Connelly posted a letter at the same store. Addressed to Deb Forsythe. Hand-written. Ray does not use the phone if he doesn't have to — this is understood — but he uses it. The letter suggests something the phone couldn't carry, or something he needed her to hold.

And on Thursday afternoon, Deb Forsythe's ute slowed at the Henderson east gate. Engine running. She drove on. She has now done this more than once at different times of day, which means she is not checking a one-off. She is measuring.

What connects a stamp, a hand-written letter, and a woman timing a route? This paper does not know. What this paper does know is that the fourteenth of August came and went, the commission was signed, and since then the pace of private action in this town has lifted noticeably. People are writing things down. People are going places. The festival interpretation remains the polite reading. It is no longer the only one.

FOOTBALL: KEITH SAYS FOUR WORDS AND THE TOWN AGREES TO CALL IT THERE

Redgum Hollow 13.7 defeated Willowmere 11.4 on Saturday. Steve-o kicked two from the corridor and took a contested mark in the third quarter that will be described in various ways over the next week, none of them inaccurate.

After the game, Keith — who coaches with the economy of a man who finds most words suspicious — said "that's the position." Four words. The sheds accepted this as complete.

The pub carried sixty-two through Saturday night, Willowmere contingent included. Macca was watching. He was also smiling, which is the more significant data point. The win helped. The numbers helped. Whether the numbers help enough is a question Macca is not raising publicly, and so neither is this paper.

Steve-o, it is noted separately, spent Wednesday morning at the Henderson place, north paddock, farmhand repair work. Ray Connelly giving him work is the observable fact. That both men appear to operate by a preference for action over explanation is the accompanying observation. Nothing further is known, which under the circumstances reads as its own kind of affirmation.

DR SHARMA: THE DISTRICT IS EXPANDING

Priya had a full clinic Wednesday. Two of the patients were new faces from the Patten Road district — not Redgum Hollow people. Word is getting around. The logic being applied is simple enough: she stays, and people come from further out to find her. It is not a complicated equation. It is, however, one that only holds while she stays. This paper has not confirmed her intentions and declines to speculate on them in print, except to note that the clinic was full and she was there.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

From Helen Watts, Sycamore Lane:
Marge, I want it on record that I did not ask to be credited for Bingo Corner reaching five. I simply said the name. I would appreciate if the Gazette found something else to attribute to me in future. Something quieter.
— H. Watts

From a reader who requests anonymity but whose handwriting is not anonymous:
The mesh from Narrabri is due Saturday. Bruce Patterson's name is on the delivery. It would be useful if someone reminded Bruce of this.

From Gary McKenzie, Royal Hotel:
Good crowd Saturday. Thank Willowmere.
— Macca

AROUND THE DISTRICT

Weather: still no rain. The ground is making its preferences known.

The Narrabri Steel mesh is due this coming Saturday. Bruce Patterson remains the name attached to the date.

Clarrie Burton has not returned to the store bench since buying the stamp. This is being filed, not forgotten.

Bruce Patterson is fine.

Redgum Hollow does not exist, which has never stopped it from having news. The town runs on artificial intelligence and natural suspicion; the Gazette reports what it finds.
